It’s hard to believe you’re so close to the city lights as you step out of your car and bask in the smell of gumtrees and fresh country air. The Bong Bong Race Club was established in 1886 when1000 acres of private land owned by Pat Throsby, known as ‘Bong Bong’, became the site for the club’s new race track.
The races are always held in November, approximately a week after the Melbourne Cup. The 2023 event will be held on November 24.
At its peak, Bong Bong was attracting 35,000 people to the race meet. In 1985 the crowds were so big Bong Bong was shut down until 1992. As a result, the races are now open to only members and their guests and a much more palatable 7000 strong crowd attends the races each year.
Fear not, you can become a member by applying through the race club. As a member you are guaranteed the right to purchase two entry passes at the discount rate of $20. If passes are available you can invite additional guests by purchasing guest entry passes at $50 each (maximum 4).
If you love Randwick, you’ll love Bong Bong. For all those concrete cowboys and cowgirls in the big smoke dying to get their RM Williams boots dirty, it’s the perfect place. The club has approximately 130 boot picnic parking positions available for hire by financial members and 80 marquees. Or you can simply pack an esky and find a spot on the fence. There’s strictly no liquor to be brought onto the grounds, but it can either be pre-ordered or purchased on the day.
If you catch a train to the races, the race club organises a complimentary bus service for collection around the local area. Transport to the racecourse is complimentary. The return trip is $10 per person which must be paid prior to departure. Pick up locations are from Sutton Forest, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Bowral.
The club asks patrons to wear a respectable outfit to the meeting, so no thongs. While you don't have to dress up in your racing best, there is a men's and ladies Fashion on the Field competition.
You’ll find plenty of accommodation available in the surrounding towns of the Southern Highlands, but get in quickly to secure a spot.
