Believe it or not, you don’t need to fly 22 hours to experience the flavours and charm of Italy. In fact, it only takes a two hour drive to reach the small Hunter Valley town of Broke-Fordwich which transforms into a European cittadino each April for the Little Bit of Italy in Broke Festival.
As you’d expect from the historic wine growing region, wine is at the heart of this occasion with plenty of tasting opportunities throughout the eight participating venues. But what makes it so special is the involvement of local artisans, growers and chefs who invite guests to attend pasta and cocktail making classes, Italian wine tasting workshops and even a paint-and-sip class to let out your inner Michelangelo.
Of course, to do as the Italians do, it’s important to sample as much delectable food as possible. To start the day, head to Nightingale for a scrumptious Italian breakfast which is best enjoyed with coffee. For lunch, Mount Broke serves delicious and authentic pizza. Finally, head to Krinklewood Wines to top off the day with a glass (or two) of organic wine and some antipasto. Buon appetito.
While there are plenty of things to do, you don’t want to miss La Grande Festa in the Margan Barrel Room. Held on the Saturday night, it’s a chance to enjoy some impeccable food and entertainment alongside local winemakers to celebrate the soul of Italian culture.
Once you’re in Broke-Fordwich, a mini-shuttle bus will help you get from one venue to the next. While there is parking at all venues, to make the most of the shuttle, park at McNamara Park, Main Road, Broke for collection. But you know what they say in Italy, ‘Chi dorme non piglia pesci!’ which translates to ‘you snooze, you lose!’ so get your tickets as soon as the dates are locked in because these experiences sell out fast.
