The Forbes Rugby Union Club, known best locally as the mighty Platypi, has been around for over 50 years. Today, the club is the backbone of the community, with mens, womens and childrens’ leagues suitable for a range of skill sets. There’s one event in particular that sees the whole town get behind the Platypi every March, just in time for the start of rugby season – the annual Forbes Rugby President’s Lunch.
For more than 10 years, the club has welcomed guests to Grinstead Oval for a day of delicious food, drinks and good company to raise money for not only the club, but local charities too. This includes the Peter Murphy Foundation, Boys to the Bush, and the Forbes’ Men’s Shed.
The day wouldn’t be complete without a guest speaker, who traditionally leaves the guests laughing so hard they cry. Comedians Akmal Saleh, Anh Do and Aussie cricketer Kerry O’Keeffee have graced the enormous marquee at previous lunches. From what started as a small event where the current rugby president would update the local community on the club’s next steps, the annual lunch is now one of the biggest events on the Forbes social calendar. With over 1000 tickets sold each year, the proceeds dramatically boost the wellbeing of the club and the wider community.
So, if you love rugby or just want to immerse yourself in the special community spirit of Forbes, the Forbes Rugby President’s Lunch is an experience not to miss. Check the website and/or Facebook page to stay up to date with the mighty Platypi.
