Oysters may be an acquired taste but whether you’re a fan or not, the Narooma Oyster Festival truly is the perfect weekend getaway – and we promise there’s something for everyone.
Located on the NSW South Coast is the small town of Narooma which translates to ‘clear blue waters’ in the traditional Walbunja language of the area. It’s a prime location for all seafood, but oysters are the pearl of the community. The festival celebrates the sustainable produce from the local area including fish, shellfish, abalone, urchins, kelp, dairy, olives along with the growers and chefs.
The Oyster Festival kicks off on Friday night with a stunning waterfront picnic, live music and fireworks. But Saturday is when the main event takes place; Australia’s Oyster Shucking Championships.
The competition attracts oyster shuckers from all over the world and their skill and pizzazz with a knife must be seen to be believed. Throughout the weekend, local farmers are scattered throughout the festival with bits and pieces to taste, plus over 50 food and beverage stalls too, so be sure to arrive hungry! And of course, there are bars on site to wash it all down with a delicious craft beer or wine. For the true-blue oyster lovers, the Ultimate Oyster Experience is a must try. You’ll be guided by an oyster expert to discover what flavours make the perfect oyster. Finish on a high with a wine from the Batemans Bay and NSW Central Ranges, or a Big NIles Brewing Co Oyster Stout. While there is parking available at the festival, visitors are encouraged to leave their car at one of the surrounding suburbs and catch the free shuttle bus which runs on Friday evening and all day Saturday from Pambula, Merimbula, Bega, Bermagui, Corbargo and Batemans Bay.The next festival is the 3rd and 4th of May 2024 so block out your calendars now!
